Thermostat Page - Learn how to wire a thermostat
Thermostat definitions, do you know how to choose a programmable thermostat?
Here are some definitions and thermostat terminology for those
interested
Programmable Thermostat:
Programmable thermostats allow flexibility to homeowners because they
can be programmed to match their lifestyle. A programmable thermostat
will keep you and your home comfortable while you are there to enjoy it,
and will change the setpoint at programmed times to an energy savings
level when you are not home. By simply planning your schedule, you can
enjoy the benefits of personalized comfort and enhanced energy savings.
Zoning Thermostat:
Zoning is simply a way of dividing your home into areas with similar
heating and cooling needs. By providing one thermostat for each area the
homeowner is able to customize different rooms in the home to different
temperatures.
Conventional Forced Air thermostat:
Conventional forced air systems rely on a central fan in the heating
and
cooling equipment to distribute conditioned air throughout the house.
The heat is provided by burning Natural Gas, Propane, Electricity, or
Oil.
Heat Pump thermostat:
A Heat pump is a reversible compressor that produces air
conditioning
and heating from the same unit. A reversing valve changes direction of
the refrigerant through the compressor depending upon what the
thermostat is set to. (heating or cooling) Heat Pumps require a specific
type of thermostat different from a Conventional Forced Air System.
Multi-Stage Thermostat:
A multi-stage system can provide more than one amount (stage) of
heating
or cooling. For example, it may run on low speed during mild outdoor
temperatures and on a high speed when needed to overcome extreme outdoor
temperatures. It may have Emergency Heat or Aux Heat.
Non-Programmable Thermostat:
A non-programmable thermostat has the ability to regulate room
temperature to one desired setpoint. The setting on the thermostat must
be manually changed if a new temperature setpoint is desired.
